New study on knowledge valorisation: recommendations for Austria’s innovation landscape published

The National Contact Point for Intellectual Property and Knowledge Valorisation (NKS-IP) has published a comprehensive study on the national implementation of the EU guidelines on knowledge valorisation. The team, led by Technopolis/Radauer, developed recommendations for action based on two stakeholder workshops and interviews with experts.
The study provides valuable impetus for the strategic development of knowledge and technology transfer in Austria and supports the implementation of the four EU codes on knowledge valorisation. The results of the study will therefore also serve as a guide for future NCP-IP activities.

Collaborative innovation systems: Recommendations for promoting collaboration in research, development and innovation

This study analyses approaches to strengthening collaboration throughout the entire research, development and innovation (R&D&I) process. Based on the identification of gaps in the Austrian innovation system and an analysis of international best-practice examples, ten specific recommendations for action have been developed.
It sets out how the innovation ecosystem in Austria can be sustainably strengthened through greater involvement of different stakeholders, increased societal relevance of innovation and improved exploitation of research results. The findings thus provide important impetus for the further development of collaborative innovation processes.

Knowledge Valorisation Plattform
The EU’s Knowledge Valorisation Platform is an online platform that connects stakeholders from across Europe to translate research results into concrete, sustainable solutions for society (e.g. economic, environmental or social benefits).
It serves as a community and forum for exchange where experiences, best practices and knowledge are shared, and where collaborations between different partners can develop.
The platform also offers content and formats such as best practice examples, thematic focus areas, talks, events and practical guidelines (e.g. on intellectual property, standardisation or collaboration between industry and academia).

EU initiatives on recycling
IAM4RE (Intellectual Asset Management for Research and Entrepreneurship) is an EU-funded project aimed at improving the management of research outcomes and enhancing their use for innovation and entrepreneurship. The focus is on the exploitation of so-called ‘intellectual assets’ such as data, know-how and software – going beyond traditional intellectual property protection.
Universities and research institutions are to be supported through training, tools and guidelines to increase the value of their research and enhance its economic and societal impact.

IMPAC3T-IP is an EU-funded project that is driving the further development of intellectual property (IP) licensing models. The aim is to improve the management of IP and enhance its impact on the economy and society through a practical toolbox and accompanying training.
The focus is on a scenario-based approach to licensing, particularly in the areas of classical and extended licensing (‘Classical Plus’), licensing in crisis situations, and in complex collaborative projects (‘Co-creation’).
The project is aimed at stakeholders across the entire IP value chain and supports them in better addressing new challenges in the management of intellectual property.

IP4OS (Intellectual Property for Open Science) aims to systematically link intellectual property (IP) with open science practices. The aim is to make research findings more accessible and to enhance their exploitation for the benefit of society, the economy and innovation.
At the heart of the project is an integrated approach (‘Synergy Framework’) that demonstrates how agile IP management and open science can be used in a complementary manner.
The project supports research institutions and professionals by providing guidelines and establishing multi-disciplinary teams to help them effectively exploit research results (such as data, software or publications) and make them more accessible.

The widerAdvance project is an EU-funded initiative that supports organisations in so-called widening countries and outermost regions in maximising the impact of their research and innovation outcomes.
Through targeted support for dissemination and exploitation – that is, the sharing and practical application of project results – the aim is to ensure that research findings are put into practice, to strengthen sustainable innovation processes, and to improve participation in the European Research Area.
To this end, widerAdvance offers free, tailor-made support from experts, training, coaching, and measures to improve visibility, IP strategies and market proximity.

The Horizon Results Booster is an EU initiative that supports EU-funded research and innovation projects in effectively disseminating their results and putting them to practical use. The aim is to translate research findings into concrete social and economic applications and to maximise their impact.
To this end, the Booster offers free, tailor-made services such as consultancy, coaching and strategic support in the areas of dissemination, exploitation and market launch. The services are aimed at ongoing or completed projects from EU funding programmes and assist them in successfully developing and raising the profile of their results.

Horizon Results Platform TV (HRP TV) is a learning programme designed to help participants in research and innovation programmes successfully bring their results to market. It focuses on practical insights and guidance on topics such as funding from business angels or venture capital, intellectual property management, and available support services.
The programme is complemented by testimonials from researchers who have successfully navigated the path to entrepreneurial practice. It also provides a clear overview of current developments in the European patent system, such as the unitary patent and the Unified Patent Court.

Impact Licensing is an innovative approach to licensing intellectual property rights, whereby existing technologies are reused and repurposed in such a way as to generate additional societal benefits without compromising existing economic returns. This approach aims to create incentives to apply technologies in new areas of use, whilst gaining further insights into their practical application and performance.
As part of the EU-funded Impact Licensing Initiative, a toolkit and training package is being developed and a network of facilitators established to promote the application of this approach across Europe. The aim is to contribute to achieving the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, to strengthen access to data and technologies in crisis situations, and to support innovation and new market opportunities.

The European IP Helpdesk is a free initial advisory service provided by the European Commission, designed specifically to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and researchers with questions relating to intellectual property. Its focus is on providing assistance with the protection, management and strategic use of intellectual property (IP), particularly in connection with EU-funded research and innovation projects and cross-border business activities.
The service includes personal advice via a helpline, practical information materials and a wide range of training courses and webinars. The aim is to strengthen the competent management of intellectual property rights and to promote innovation and its commercial exploitation.
