European Commission Code of Practice for Academia-Industry Co-Creation

Cooperation between universities and businesses bridges the gap between research and application and is therefore of central importance for creating economic and social added value. The European Commission's Code of Practice for Science and Industry Cooperation aims to show how joint innovation and knowledge valorisation can help to better address social and economic challenges. The aim is to translate research results into practical solutions more quickly and effectively.

Specific to-dos for organisations and researchers:

  • Strategy and leadership: Collaboration between science and industry should be firmly embedded in organisational strategy. This requires clear goals and commitment at all management levels.
  • Collaboration and networks: Interdisciplinary collaboration and exchange between researchers, companies and intermediaries should be facilitated, and digital platforms should be used for networking.
  • Incentives and recognition: Incentives for successful partnerships should be provided, e.g. through awards, career advancement or joint ownership rights.
  • Communication and awareness raising: The advantages and successes of cooperation should be communicated regularly to promote a culture of innovation.

Intermediaries and infrastructure: The role of intermediaries (e.g. technology transfer offices) should be strengthened and investment made in shared infrastructure that accelerates the transfer of research results into practical applications.
